The Unrelenting Revolution: The Struggle For Democracy In Myanmar, with author SiuSue Mark

On February 1, 2021, Myanmar was thrown into a state of crisis by a military coup, abruptly ending a decade of civilian rule. Deploying lethal force, the military leaders assumed that most people would meekly acquiesce. However, they underestimated the tenacity of the democracy that had taken root in the last decade. A civil disobedience movement quickly emerged and was soon followed by armed struggle among urban youth.

Presented by author SiuSue Mark, who lived in Myanmar from 2008 to 2019, this program provides context for Myanmar’s struggles. In her recently published book “Forging A Nation: Land Struggles in Myanmar's Transition Period,” she gives her perspective on how democratic institutions were fought over and built from 2011 to 2020.
